These devices were brought here to curb "Global Warming" but they don't work because its TOO COLD!!

Jim Gehrz, Star Tribune

The Startribune has a good article today about the windmills that aren't working because of the cold weather but they put a very positive spin on the whole thing.

The article mentions the wind turbines should start to work in about 2 months, well duh!! It also mentions another solution could be to run electric heaters to warm up the fluid.

Am I the only one who sees the irony here?

First, in 2 months it will be warmer, hopefully.

Second, you would need another electrical source for the electric heaters. Once the windmill starts turning, then hopefully it would generate enough power to run the heaters to warm the fluid so it could turn if it was windy enough so it could produce...

Third, the only reason these billion dollar boondoggles were brought here is because of "Global Warming" which we now know is a fraud, obviously! But that is not going to stop us, we plan to litter the entire state with these monstrosities.

Its called the "Next Generation Energy Act of 2007", which mandates Minnesota utilities to produce at least 12 percent of their electricity from renewable resources by 2012. PLUS, they must produce 1 1/2% LESS electricity every year starting this year. On the second point I'd say they're off to a good start.

I like to call this bill the "Next Generation is Screwed Act of 2007" and it should be repealed now before any more damage is done.

I have postulated the use of little tiny windmills to power the heaters for the big, giant windmills. Either that or tiny Japanese nuclear reactors to heat the OIL that is needed for the big, giant windmills to generate electricity!!! Maybe, I'm way off, and hamsters are our only hope. But what would keep the hamsters warm? Dilemmas, dilemmas...

Ha! I like the Mini Nuke Idea because if the wind isn't blowing the mini Windmills won't generate any power so the fluid will still be too thick.

Now, how to cool the mini-nuke reactor in the summer?! Hamsters again may be needed.

Wind energy is the most expensive form of electrical generation, even without
considering the cost of required backup and subsidies. When they are included,
wind is four times the cost of our most efficient coal, gas, and nuclear technologies.

Do panting hamsters emit more Co2?

Elmer, wouldn't the windmill saga would make a great video? "Come and listen to a story about a hamster named Jed..."

:D

These wind generators are a poor investment. They will never pay for themselves and they will never produce enough energy to make a difference. There sole purpose is to make a few dumb greenies feel good.

What about the carbon footprint being exacted on the scene by all the service vehicles seen in the photo. They probably left them running, too, while they tried to rectify the situation. I do like the hamsters idea, but how much methane do they emit?

They're gonna run a hot-air pipeline from the capital building in St Paul. Chillers may have to be installed to prevent overheating the hydraulic fluid, though. DL

The STRIB is so biased. We quit them 6 years ago. Hope they die out.

Those big windmills have been around long enough now so we should be able to determine just how useful they really are. Where is the data to prove their usefulness?

Even though I used hamsters for the example, I actually have 3 mice, each with their own running wheel. They do run all night long, so its certainly a more viable electicity option than large windmills. Maybe I can power up my cell phone, which is more than the wind generators will in MN.

And, nobody seems to include the cost in energy to manufacture the components and erect the assembly.

This problem is just an example of poor engineering. In addition to most large wind turbines having a relatively high minimum wind velocity in order to operate, the manufacturer obviously selected a gearbox fluid with a high "pour point". By retrofitting the fluid in the gearbox with a 100% synthetic fluid with an ultra-low "pour point", this problem can be mitigated, if not completely eliminated. As long as wind turbines are manufactured of paper-mache and utilize fluids purchased from China, toppling windmills and frozen drive systems will continue to be a plague for the industry.

Enlightening this is worth checking out. Thanks for a good post.

Hey. Great blog. I've been searching around for blogs like this for a while, and I finally found the info I've been looking for!

Political spin doctors have always impressed me. If I had half the ability I'm pretty sure instead of ever being grounded I would have been rewarded growing up. Check out this link to a story about Harry Reid and his amazing spin doctoring http://bit.ly/bkfLRU
