So I wake up this morning and it -23 on my thermometer and I wanted to see how cold it is in northern Minnesota. So I go to the Statribune's website and I find this map.

Which makes it look like all of Minnesota is in the 0º to -10º range, which doesn't make sense because my thermometer reads -23, and if you look at the color key on the top they only have colors down to -10ºF. Does Startribune.com think that anything below -10º isn't news worthy? Plus the whole state should at least be in the white because the high right now for the whole state is in Minneapolis and it is -12F.
So I go to weather.com and find this map.

Although weather.com only has one color for anything below zero they at least show the numeric temps on their map so you can see that northern Minnesota has been -30ºF for 2 days now. Shouldn't that be news, especially in the state where it is happening? There should be 4 color bands in Minnesota alone, ALL BELOW ZERO. This makes me think that startribune.com might be complicit in hiding the decline.
There are no 60º temps anywhere in the country, would it be so hard to make the 50s red 40s orange and so on, so that each 10º temp range would have it's own color band? I think it would be more news worthy the further it gets below zero, but everyone seems to be hiding it.

Glad to see someone else noticed the color changes on the weather maps. I noticed over the summer when everything above 80 was hell-fire red.
Great website and love the videos!
It's sad when the weather gets politicized like this. It used to be we would all get excited about being the coldest spot in the nation, now we have to hide it.
Hiding the decline, it's going on nationwide.
My guess is that winter 2009-10 will kill off the hoax.
I sure hope so, and let's start repealing all of those carbon laws that are based on a fraud.
Well the Warming might be coming. It is 79 degrees in Poway, CA (East San Diego County)
Might the newspaper have mixed up their centigrades and their farenheits?
I thought it was cold here in upstate NY! The global warming alarmists will never quit, but average people won't be able to deny the cold they actually feel. Brr!
You're just trying to confuse people so they don't believe in global warming. I believe the Strib they would never lie.
Well maybe they lie, in the food section when they say chicken tastes good.
We got up to 15 degrees above zero yesterday here in central Wisconsin!! A heat wave, I have to admit, it did feel kind of balmy after having lows of -15 overnight. Our pellet stove is going through a 40 pound bag of pellets a day, that's when you know it is cold out.
But this is not the end of the cold, that's for sure. The last two summers were so cool here that I never even had to put on the air conditioner. Most nights last summer we slept under a big quilt, we even had to start the pellet stove up a few times!
You are not really that cold. Your thermometer is simply upside down--just ask Al Gore.
I live jsut south of Warroad,MN...according to my digital thermometer, on Saturday morning it was -38.5F, on Sunday it was -32.1F and this morning a balmy -30.3F....currently at 3pm Monday my thermometer says it is -3.1F
sorry to hear that, you have my sympathy.
not to defend the star & sickle but I think your thermometer reads the temp including the windchill (which is how everything should be recorded since that is what we feel), weather reporting has always separated windchill from temps for some reason.
yeah, no, it was -30F real temps look at the second map it shows real temps at -32F in northern Minnesota.
I love your site and recommend it to all.
living in Sydney (Australia) I cannot even begin to comprehend how anyone survives your climate.
Maybe the cold sharpens your wits.
