Heard this on MPR this morning, almost drove off the road.
Here are some excerpts:
Minnesota already has some of the strongest requirements in the country for utilities to become more efficient and produce more power with renewables.
...most of the electricity still comes from coal-fired power plants, and Great River Energy is worried about the costs of cap and trade. ... only expects to get enough permits to cover half the company's emissions.... the best way for utilities to reduce their greenhouse gases is through conservation. In fact, Minnesota requires utilities to try to sell one-and-a-half percent less electricity every year.
Higher electricity prices might provide some persuasive power of their own. And a cap and trade system will make electricity generated by fossil fuels more expensive. So Minnesotans will either have to use less or pay more.
What struck me the most is that our law requires electrical companies to sell one-and-a-half percent less electricity every year. What if they discover cold fusion? The goal here doesn't seem to be to reduce emissions but rather to reduce electrical generation.
Stephanie says we have two options, use less electricity or pay more. I can think of a third option ...MOVE!

Nice site the good NPR folks have ... kind of like a Nazi one would have looked, if the Nazis had PCs. "Graphic: Minnesota's top greenhouse gas emitters" looks much like a target list.
All this is getting creepier and creepier.
I saw that, I think we should support those companies kind of like a reverse boycott.
The majority are power companies, so you're already supporting them :P
Of course, you already have your new smart meters,right? Get ready for electicity rationing coming to a city near you;
http://investors.portlandgeneral.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=377447
"The new meters, which communicate over a wireless network much like a cell phone system, will provide PGE with two-way communications to its residential and commercial meters, enabling many customer benefits....
...demand response -- a pricing structure program that encourages customers to use energy at less expensive times of the day, when the peak demand is lower; and direct load control programs -- a program in which customers would agree to permit the utility to turn off certain appliances for limited periods when demand is high. These types of programs will reduce the need for new generation resources to meet peak demand."
Heh,they want to start turning our lights off for us. My kids like the idea as they are tired of my yelling at them to turn off the light.:D
Merry Christmas everyone......
It is about population control. Note that the intellectual leaders in these movements believe evolution, that the world is over populated, and the byproducts of modern civilization are evil.
Most of the followers of liberal movements don't understand this, because they are spoon fed their knowledge by fast information (read: mass media).
They totally ignore changes in humanity and technological developments. Their definition of "sustainable" means that our current activities must be INFINITELY sustainable. So we can't burn any wood without immediately planting a new tree afterwards. We can only use solar electricity and not nuclear because nuclear fuel reserves only lasts 10000 years and solar lasts a billio years. They never consider we might travel to another solar system in 1000 years from now, we might not even need oil anymore then. They assume we remain at the exact technological level we are now (wind-turbines etc.) forever and never advance.
Too true Zammy. These are true blue Malthusians. "We're all going to die!" Yeah. Sure. We were all supposed to be dead around 1910 or so.
In a self fulfilling promise they joined up with the neo-Luddites to stop all progress. Cheap energy means a better and better life for all. We can also support a larger population. So what do they do... QED.
I just got my Ipod touch 32 GB (3rd Generation) last week and I haven't put it down. I was long over due for a MP3 upgrade (had a creative Zen for years) and can't believe I waited so long. This Ipod touch is amazing not only for music but I was able to do everything I needed without having to go back to my lap top (control my fantasy football team, pay bills, shop on line, read the news, etc) thanks to the Apps. So easy to use. Never owned an Ipod before so I can't compare to previous versions but for any one looking to upgrade, this is a no brainer.

Investors are closely watching major homebuilders like Lennar because their performance is key to the housing market's recovery, which has been dampened by job losses and tight access to credit for many would-be buyers.

There are three things you should consider when buying an energy meter. One is battery life, next is accuracy, and third is the brand.
